May 4 Striper Fishing Report and Black Drum Reports

Another tough striper trip and on this one we ran at least 30 miles up the bay trying to find some the post spawn trophy stripers. From the best of our knowledge there was not one striper caught by any of boats we talked to, but that might have been due to the extremely strong winds that made less than desirable fishing conditions.

One of my friends was up in Philly and they had warm 70 degree temperatures all day with light winds, but on the bay, it was considerably colder with 25 knot gusts from the NE or East.

With the hit or miss striper fishing this spring, we have limited our charter trips waiting for the fish to show up in the more traditional locations much closer to Cape May where we have put some excellent catches together in past springs. The cold windy spring has made for some really tough fishing conditions and hoping the bite breaks open by next weekend.

There may have been a bite another 8 miles or so north of us but there is limit on how far we can go on a striper trip with today’s $4.00 gallon diesel fuel prices. It may be time to switch to black drum fishing until the stripers move down the bay closer to Cape May.  Bring on the sunshine with warm temperatures and light winds!!!!

I have heard of some nice catches of Black Drum with at least one over 50 lbs yesterday. Most reports seem to indicate Slaughter Beach, DE is the place to be when drum fishing from a boat but I did hear one report this morning of a few caught on the NJ side. Possibly with the colder spring this year we may see the Black Drum fishing rebound from what it was last year and see catches like we used to see, especially on the NJ side.  I expect the drum bite should be very good this coming weekend with the new moon and hard running tides.

We will start running both day and afternoon Black Drum trips on May 11th and if the post spawn trophy stripers show up locally combo Drum and Striper trips for the next few weeks until we start our early season Yellowfin and Mako Shark trips in about 3 weeks.
